cannotとcan not
「can」の否定形に「cannot」という表現がありますが、「can not」というように2語に分けて表記することも可能です。しかしどちらを用いるべきかという話になれば前者の方が一般的です。「can not」は、「not」が示す「否定」の意味を特別に強調しますので、このような強調が望ましくなければ「can not」は不適切です。この強い否定の形「can not」が望ましいケースが2つあります。
ひとつは、「can not」を含む文によって表される内容が特別に重要な場合で、もうひとつは「not」に示される否定が読者の期待に反するという場合です。こういったケース以外には1語の「cannot」を用いるべきです。
以下に「can not」の典型的な正しい用例を示します。
(1) Francis et al. claimed that these tui bules dilate sufficiently to allow a flow rate of 3 cm3/s, but our experiments clearly demonstrate that they can not. In fact, we have found that even under extreme conditions, the maximum flow rate is less than 1 cm3/s.
(2) The main finding of this study is that for α>αc, when computing the velocity, we can not ignore the nonlinear coupling of modes.
