adaptとadopt
「adapt」と「adopt」はしばしば混同されます。
その際よく見られるのは「adapt」の意味を示すつもりが「adopt」を用いてしまうという誤りです。それぞれの動詞が持つ意味はかなり違うため、混同してしまうと深刻な問題が生じます。ここで留意すべきは「adapt」は基本的に「適応させる」、「適合させる」、「適用させる」、「適応する」という意味を持ち、「adopt 」は「採用する」、「選ぶ」、「取り入れる」、「受け入れる」という意味を持つということです。
以下の例文を比較して「adapt」と「adopt」の意味上の違いを明確にしてみましょう。
(1) We adopted this indirect measurement techni&que for use in in vitro experiments.
(2) We adapted this indirect measurement technique for use in in vitro experiments.
これらの文で例示される「adapt」と「adopt」の用法はどちらも正しいのですが、意味は異なります。(1)での「adopted」が、単に「measurement technique」が「in vitro experiments」において「利用された」という意味を表すのに対し、(2)の「adapted」は、この「measurement technique」が「in vitro experiments」において有効に活用できるよう「あらかじめ適切に変えられ」、「用意された」という状況を表しています。
以下に「adopt」の典型的な誤用を含む例文とその修正例を挙げます。
